Things I saw today in Peru: Mc Donald's, Burger King, Starbucks, KFC, Payless & Golds Gym.
Also lots of gorgeous old churches & plazas & fountains & the ocean & 200 something year old bones in the catacombs below St Francis church. Creepy!!
There are lots of street vendors, which I'm used to from Colombia, but one guy had these butterflies that you wound up, I think with a rubber band, and then the pretty realistically flew. He had one guy open a book and get surprised when the butterfly flew out. The guy seemed pretty genuinely charmed by his own product, and rightly so, they were delightful.
Another fave of the day was seeing the library of the monastary. It WAS very Harry Potter-esque as the guide pointed out. Beautiful natural light from the windows & skylights, no need for electricity. Candles were a possibility at night but they prefered to just close down, too much of a fire hazard.
We walked down a row of restaurants where all the waiters/hosts would approach you on the street to see if they could herd you into THEIR place. It was wild. We ended up not going to ANY of them cuz we ran out of time, but we'll possibly go back tonight...
Cusco tomorrow! I hope I don't have altitude problems!
