Roller Coaster Ride

Oh yeah, so that emotional roller coaster I was mentioning in the last post, we took a little downhill turn today.  I'm still overall very much happier than I was a few months ago, exciting things are happening, little jobs are coming in for a little bit more money, I'm keeping really busy and being more social, and I almost wouldn't register this little blip except that I'd kind of like to keep some sort of record of these down times to see if/how they coordinate with my monthly cycle, which I suspect strongly that they do.  But as always, it's not that the emotions aren't there and then magically pop into existence, it's just that my abilities to ignore or deny or stuff them down weakens at certain points, or when I let myself think about it for extended periods or a certain circumstance brings it to my face...

My current class on Melody is really bringing it up.  I have a hard time with feeling stupid, with allowing myself to learn new things.  It's particularly hard when I have a dichotomy of my brain understanding the underlying theory behind something, and my hands just plain not having the built in or trained ability to make it happen.  It's scary and frustrating because I don't know how much practice it would take to get to that mind/body fluency, if I would ever even get there, and if I DO have the capacity, what would be the fastest way to get there.  So I end up avoiding it altogether, doing stupid things that give me a false and fast sense of accomplishment like dopey games on Facebook - "I made it to level 24!" and such.  The Melody class makes me feel stupid.  Makes me think things like, "Well, maybe I should just be a lyricist..."

This is a deep, deep pattern, procrastinating to the point of not having much time to finish a project, so that I have a "good excuse" if it ends up not being very good - "of course it's not, I didn't spend much time on it!"

I have wild vacillating moments of thoughts that seem normal at one second and then seem wildly audacious the next - I saw a site for a songwriting contest and started pondering if I should enter - it's $35 per song, which is not that much and yet kind of a lot of money.  It's definitely a barrier to make sure people are sure of themselves to a point that means a certain level of quality for the most part.  So I was really thinking about it like it was no big deal, just try it without any expectations sort of thing, and then I started seeing some of the names of people who had entered and won or even just been finalists in the past, people I really admire and think are great songwriters.  And then I quickly spiraled down into comparison land again - "Who am I to even try to put myself up next to those people?!"

But tiny things give me hope - working on a song with someone I trust, who will tell me when things aren't working, and then her saying for one of them "This is really pretty."  Getting asked to record a little, and comparing that recording to a big name and thinking it actually sounds pretty good, sound quality-wise anyway.  (There's another one of those things where I do something that seems normal at first and then suddenly audacious).  A nice comment on a YouTube video.  Online musician friends taking my requests for advice seriously and giving me real feedback.  Last year a pop singer visiting from LA, who has been signed to a big label years back, telling me that she really LIKED my melodies.  Twice.  And that was stuff I wrote years before this class!  I don't know what it will/would take for me to feel like I have permission to be here, to do this.

I talked to G and he said he didn't think I should give up so easily on songwriting.  That maybe I needed to take more classes, spend more hours on the work.  That frustrated me because we looked at the financials months back, when I was deciding to do the whole certificate program, and there just wasn't any way that I could just take classes (like maybe 2 at a time) and not be bringing at least a minimum amount of money in to cover bills.  I feel like I've really minimized my expenses and I don't really see any areas where I could cut back further.  I've gotten even more creative in trying to figure out trades/volunteering/working for certain things that I want/need to have/do.

G was maybe also implying that I just need to be patient and take more time, however much I need, but I feel so much pressure to do/be/have/get started "for real" NOW NOW NOW.  Because I know we want a family both family and career are things that everyone says are best started young and I'm not getting younger!

If I just wanted to write songs for me to hear, well, I do that already.  The problem/challenge is I want to be successful.  I don't know if there's anyone in the world who knows how to do that, really, not with a formula.  Well, there are formulas for pop stars maybe, but even then, why does one person or group catch on with "the public" more than the other, when all other things seem to be equal?

And then I think and wonder - do I really want to be even partially famous?  How famous does one have to be to be sustainable?  Whatever that is, could I handle it??  Not that I think that would really even probably be a problem for quite a while, or really that it's one I'd be lucky to have.  And I read the blogs of the independent artists I admire who are working their asses off and the are struggling to stay afloat and people are watching the TV's in the bars instead of them, and I see the shows here in town where the cafe which is small already feels empty and I'm trying to discretely count how many people are there and figure out the worst possible scenario for how much they need to spend on gas and will they make it to the next town but thank goodness they have a free place to stay tonight at least and why on earth would I want to put myself through that, huh?

Well, the reason why is because of the friggin amazing moments I have listening to those indie heros and heroines - transporting, heart opening/healing, soul connection, deep understanding, uplifting, belly laughing, epiphany moments.  I can't receive those moments and NOT be inspired to attempt to reciprocate, not necessarily with them, but with the cosmic energy - I get such a charge I feel like I need to give back however I can.  And somehow some part of me thinks/feels I need to do it in song form, rather than any other myriad ways that one could give back.  The blogging about musicians and the radio show helps a little, but it's really not enough.  I need to do it myself.  Writing songs is what watching the performances inspires me to do, not paint or write novels or whatever, writing a song.

The other thing that frustrates me about a lot of the classes I take is they seem to want to teach me about the blues.  I like the blues live, and for dancing.  But I don't sit down and pick out a blues album to listen to when I want to listen to music.  It's not the kind of music I want to write (at this point in my life at least!  Don't want to be definitive when who knows who/how I will be in the future).  I know that there will be principles in blues music that will apply to any kind of music, but it feels like a roundabout way to get to what I want.  I actually like a lot of what I write, at the time I write it at least, but I don't have the perspective to know if it's any good in the eyes of the general opinion.  I know there will always be people on the full range of the fence, but there really is a general consensus on a lot of things.

I really need someone I can talk to about this, maybe several someones, but people who can both tell me the truth about where I stand at the moment, and what my chances are, without crushing my soul or making me feel dumb for even considering it.  I know my beautiful, wonderful, amazing friends and family can give me all sorts of encouragement, but it's very very sad to say, I don't generally trust them to give me the more objective feedback I need.  It's good, because I also DO need a group of people to love and support me unconditionally, I need that very much!  But I think I'm ready for that other level of feedback from a different group of people, that pushes me forward...

Late night freak out ramblings....

I know, I know!

There was this neat conference call last night, an indie musicians support group type of thing on a neat site called Talkshoe. I couldn't be in for the whole thing, but it was also recorded so I went back and listened to it today and people would ask questions like "Does anyone know about RSS? I heard it's good but I have no idea what it is." And I was silently bounding out of my seat screaming, "I KNOW, I KNOW!!" to nearly all of their questions, or I had an opinion to share on nearly all of them. It felt like I was one of those people who shouts the answers to Jeopardy when it's on TV or something. Except it was all on the inside. LOL.

I've started formulating a letter to respond to some of the things they were mentioning. It just kind of kills me that people don't know about these things that could SO improve their lives! ahhh! But it also makes me think I could have some value. It's crazy, because all the stuff I know is just from reading and researching, that anyone could do, but they obviously haven't had the time to do that, and/or don't even know where or what to look for. Maybe I have a place in the world! :D But I still really want to write my OWN songs and get out there! ARGH! TOO MUCH TOO MUCH! I want it all!!

Feeling much, much, much better. Still have a stupid cough. Just remembered the herbal concoction that S recommended to me back in the AS days for getting rid of congestion. It is MOST FOUL, but effective. damn. Now I'll have to go get some. blegh. The things I will do to go the herbal route over drugs...

Woo!

Has a new CD! w00t!, here's an excerpt from an interview she actually did a while ago, but this part got me teary-eyed.....
FEMMUSIC: What advise would you give to an emerging woman artist just starting out?

WW: Get out there. Network. Meet as many people as you can. Make a business card. Play as many gigs as you can. The biggest thing is getting out there.

When I started to start making music seven years ago I got a job bartending at the Fox Theater. What an opportunity! Musicians everywhere. People always around me. I built bands, and I hired people. I'm constantly working at work.

The first thing I would tell people, another thing I tell people in my business class is network. Get out there.

Jude (Junis Ponds) said she was really shy until she started bartending. You can't be shy. You have to say, "I am a musician, and I am here so come listen to me, come see me play." Sometimes you feel like you're being cheesy but you hope people are receptive to that.

FEMMUSIC: What else would you like to say to our readers about you, Women From Mars, Lilith Fair, and music in general?

WW: Just that it's fun, and I'm pursuing my dream. If you can get a clear idea in your head of what you want, what your dream is, then it's that much easier to go get it. So I'm chasing my dream.

...Write from the heart. Play music. Be open to people who are better than you and not as good as you; we're all doing the same thing. Help each other along. And make music, and art. Art's a great form too.

God I love her............ I think I'll go cry in bed for a while...... sooo tired.... working with stupid invoices. NOT what I want to be doing in my life.... ugh.

Everything

"Everything" Alanis Morissette
(damn. I almost wish I wrote this. I need to finish my version of the kind of story going on here... Te adoro mi amor. Gracias por todo)

I can be a nightmare of the grandest kind (I believe this is the line where she says asshole on the uncensored version)
I can withhold like it’s going out of style
I have the bravest heart that you’ve ever seen
And you’ve never met anyone who's as positive as I am sometimes

You see everything, you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything of which I'm ashamed
There's not anything to which you can’t relate
And you’re still here

I blame everyone else, not my own partaking
My passive-aggressiveness can be devastating
I'm the most gorgeous woman that you’ve ever known
And you’ve never met anyone who's as everything as I am sometimes

You see everything, you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything of which I'm ashamed
There's not anything to which you can’t relate
And you’re still here

What I resist, persists, and speaks louder than I know
What I resist, you love, no matter how low or high I go

You see everything, you see every part
You see all my light and you love my dark
You dig everything of which I'm ashamed
There's not anything to which you can’t relate
And you’re still here

And you’re still here
And you're still here...

New Alanis!

yay! She's cool.

She just made fun of the whole Janet Jackson thing here

here's her website

Here is player with the new single Everything

I didn't know she had cut her hair! Looks cute.

My mom said it was ok for me to write sad songs... I don't really want to put more sad songs into the world, but I guess it's ok to cry if it gets it out of you. I don't want to walk around with this banner "I'm depressed!" It seems like such a cop out. but I am... depressed... The big part of me knows somewhere that "this too shall pass", and my mom says I need to be to myself what I am to my friends. But I can't pick myself up, it doesn't work that way.

Tobi came over today. Her aunt died in a car accident. She was driving herself back from giving blood, and they think she fainted... yikes. Unfortunately she was also estranged from most of the family, and hadn't had a chance to mend that. Plus the guy she hit is in the hospital, and probably most of her estate is going to have to pay for that, so if her kids want anything they will have to BUY it. That's awful. ugh. Poor Tobers. On top of the hardness of Levi dying, this too. wow. we had tea and cookies and shared travel pictures. good stuff. She wants me to help plan a "coming of age" birthday party for her. That will be a fun project. what a brave person who asks for what she wants!

The Start of Dar walked through my door...

Saw Andrew Calhoun last night at Paradiso. Not my favoritest ever, but it was good to get out. Some really neat songs, and neat old celtic and scottish ballads, but also just not the style that really lights my candle. Probably also good that I wasn't that jazzed about it, because I really can't afford another CD at the moment. I thought, and discovered I was right on his website, that Waterbug was where Dar Williams got her start, and he started that! so jolly good! entirely redeemed! I might have enjoyed it a bit more if I was paying more attention, but I was having fun drawing...

I saw that lady Catherine I met at another Paradiso concert. She has a job at the Raj Restaurant now that she says keeps her busy. We both drew pretty things. I brought one of my actual journals and some glitter pens, because I wanted to be able to bring it home afterwards. It was neat, she saw a barrette in some other lady's hair, and it reminded her of a fan, and she drew this kind of fan purse, and that reminded me of fans so I tried to draw one, and fans reminded me of the Mikado, so I drew a neat Japanese lady in a kimono all in silver, but just her lips were red. I was quite pleased with that! :D

Sarah's gone.......

I'm sad. Didn't get to say a proper goodbye. Don't know when I'll get to see her again.. poop.
At least we got to hang out more this time than last time she came...

Kristi concert was awesome. Sarah Woolf, her opener was cool too. She's out and touring after several years of being sick in bed and then rehab for an arthritic type of disease. How amazing and strong. She said she has a lot of songs in open tuning and plays with her thumbs because that's what came back first... super cool! Work with what ya got, don't let anything stop you... wow. I need to do that.

I'm brilliant

Honestly! See, back when I was entering email addresses of the Iowa hotels, museums etc into the ArtLife database, I also entered the MAILING addresses! So now instead of typing all that crap again, since I had already figured out how to export the Yahoo address book, I just had to shift around a few columns! Hell yeah! And I thought I had hours more of work to do. w00t. I WIN!!!! Ok, there are still a few left, but not like 20 pages worth. *happy butt dance - Ananda style!*

Well, the brochures better be done. I totally forgot about calling Stephanie today... crap. better call her in the AM.

Unless something has changed, tomorrow I get to house/pet-sit for the Labaghs. yay!

wow. like at least 3 nights in a row of after 2am bedtimes. Is it more than that? And I think I pulled a couple others, although maybe not quite in a row. Yeah, crap, looking back, it's been almost a week of staying up past 12, and a bunch of them after 2. Gross. WTF is wrong with me?!?!?! G is almost done with PK. He'll get me back on track, at least a couple hours earlier I bet... But that sucks. Why can't I put myself to bed, huh?

Kristi Martel is coming on Saturday to Cafe Paradiso. I printed up some nifty posters off her website and made a few into table toppers and handouts... now I just gotta get rid of em. I really hope people come. She rocks.

wow

today I was soooo tired and miserable. ugh. and staying up right now to do this won't help anything tomorrow really. But yuck.

Good thing - both the AQ and the YG are at the printers. No more to do about them, onscreen anyway. Now I have to enter all the addresses for mailing, because that is the whole point of printing so many extra, to mail them out... I have learned a lot I didn't know, and it was cool to see the blueline of the AQ printed out all big and stuff! weeeee! I only ever saw it tiny on my screen, or really tiny printed out...

Got my oil changed, free car wash, and vacuumed out my car too! Dropped of Wally's cards at the At Home store, and we'll see what Rosie says. Maybe she will take a few, and I could get The Antique Flower Garden to take some too... I think that would be 2 good places to sell them... Sorta different clientel prolly. Yeah. Hope that works out.

Cried a lot at work today. Dad came in to tell me something and asked what was the matter... Saw a documentary of Joni Mitchell last night, which make me all sad about not doing my music. She talked about one of her grandmothers who kicked a door off the hinges because she was so creatively frustrated, and how her other grandmother was too, and she felt like maybe she was the one to break the cycle... G was talking tonight about how I should get out of here. But I don't know where/when/why/how... If I had a really good reason or thing to do, well then, maybe, but it would be so hard to be away from him, and besides, I don't know what I'd do really... The blessed boy doesn't know what it is to be miserable. Says he has tried but can't do it. Just to see what it is that other people go through. Amazing. Enjoy that. Be blessed!
I also told my dad we were thinking of June '05, & he said that he loved G, and approved, but was that what I wanted? Was G committed to it? cue Heather thinking about ring again. I get in such a tizzy over it, because I know it's too much to ask for financially at this point, but I really want some symbol/declaration of commitment, something to hold on to so I know it's for serious. What if I mess up? What if he changes his mind? Where would I be/what would I do without him??? I mean, heaven forbid, and I don't think it's gonna happen, but sometimes it's good to check in with worst case scenario... I was having the same "what do I do with myself and my creativity is being suffocated to pay the bills" situation in Boulder too, and I was really lonely. He's so comfortable and fun to be with. I was in such a powerful space when we first met. Even despite the heartbreak, I was ok with just feeling it, knowing it would pass eventually. And like I said, even if I wasn't everything I wanted to be, I had the energy to go after it, make it happen... Where'd it go? I've gained nearly all the weight back again - to me a sign of how miserable I must be. But I just ignore it and dull out the pain with food. My dad is suggesting going to the Raj. G doesn't think I'll be able to follow through with the recommendations so why spend the money... I'm so lost. Seems like every time with this weight stuff I try a new tactic, instead of sticking to one thing and making it work... but whatever, god I hate myself right now. Nothing fits. Getting dressed isn't fun. It's whatever I can find on my floor or bed that doesn't smell. I feel so fucking worthless. And it's not just the weight. The weight is a physical expression of something bigger and deeper.

No improv for a couple of weeks... :P Spring Break, so for sure no one will show up. We really, really need to do a show... and/or get some more people involved....

I downloaded me some songs from Wal-Mart.com. yay. legal new music without buying a whole album... Don't shoot me, they're cheap there - 88 cents! I've decided this should be my new treat, instead of candy or cookies, for the same price I might spend on something sweet, I can have a song, and it lasts much longer!

I'm sore!

I went to yoga yesterday, which was absolutely delicious after 2 days of hardcore computer time, but today my muscles are a bit cranky at me... I need yoga to stretch out after yoga! Seriously though, have to do it on a regular basis, not just every once in a while.

Went to see Phill Goddard last night at Revs. It was good and stuff, but didn't reach out and grab me... I liked the idea of the drum machine, but honestly, I think it was too loud, and his vocals could have been louder. yeah, less drums, more voice. K was there, Collin and Gregory called him before I went out to update him on their Speech comp individs, and hassle him about Allison... I said I was going to the concert and he should come, and they said that maybe Allison would be there. Well, I didn't know, but yeah, I wasn't able to get a hold of Sarah last night, I imagine she was tired from the train ride anyway... We'll definitely have to do something, everyone hang out.
G came out to Rev's but stayed downstairs to drink tea and read. I was a wee bit miffed, the one night a week we have to go out and do something, and he wasn't in the mood for music. It also might have been a bit of a money thing, but he said even if I would have paid, he wasn't really in the mood. He'd gotten some French Movie and wanted to watch that, but movies can be anytime, live performances are selective.... I joked that people will start to think K and I are dating, since we sat together at the Cinderella play the night before too. (K asked me "So what about this Allison thing" so I guess she really made an impression on him!) I guess it's really ok though, I've always appreciated that we don't have to do the same things, and can have our own wants and desires and not need the other one's approval, because those joined at the hip couples kinda scare me, not to mention they seem to fall apart if they separate. We made a little nest of pillows and stuff in Tommy's office to watch the movie when we got home, since Tommy was watching new episodes of his favorite show downstairs.
On Friday after the Cinderella play (which was quite good by the way. I really enjoyed it! good story, good acting, and fun to see some new girls up there doing their thing. Not that I didn't like the "old girls" but always good to see people get turns) I called G to come to 2nd st. We had steamed milk with almond and looked at apartments in the Reader. Saw one for $225+utils over on 5th, and the Coffee Shop was closing, so we went for a walk over to the apartment. Sweet looking little house, in the dark anyway. Think must have both the upstairs and downstairs for rent, not sure which was the cheaper one. East entrance, which appeals to me. Not the best ever neighborhood, but not awful either. Kinda near the factories and the train, but could be much closer.... Guess I'd have to see the inside. REALLY want to have a bathtub, and a gas stove, and enough of a living room to do yoga/exercise tapes. And enough windows to get good lighting. Would rather have something more private/not shared, but as far as apartments go that's pretty hard. and would rather have it be in a sweet little house than a generic apartment building. I wonder what sort of requirements they have for this one, assuming I liked the inside... Deposit, that sort of thing... If I took Jeffrey's apartment I'm sure those types of things would be easy to get around, plus might be some wee bit of flexibility with payments, but yeah... not sure I want it. He want's $300+ for it anyway, and if I can go for something cheaper to start off I think that'd be better... Not even sure if I can afford the $225. There's some other one for $195+ near Adams and D. What's that supposed to mean, near? Oh... I wonder if it's in Casi's old place? One of those apartments? geesh, you can get whole 2 bedroom houses for $325! Maybe later... Split between 2 people, that's not much more than I pay now to mom (which I'm really behind on for some reason by the way. grrrrrr) Oh craptastic.
I need to work on the YELLOW GUIDE now... blah. All my ArtLife files were lost in the crash. Nobody bothered to recover my desktop, where all the really important stuff was... grrrrrrrrrrrr. So from scratch it is....

Kickin This Stone

The name of both the album and first track of the Johnsmith CD I've been listening to all day.(Get the mp3!) How often do you hear songs about kicking stones? really? well, I've probably heard it 4 or 5 times today, plus a few times yesterday, and live on Saturday night.... so yeah... but how many OTHER songs about kicking stones huh? huh?

Here's another heart healer

Rise
from Into The Mystery, by David Wilcox
..............................................

I see you dreaming by the ocean window
I hear you breathing like the waves upon the shore
The tide is turning on your time of sorrow
You will never be so lonesome any more

The breezes whisper as the curtain dances
Your dreams are deeper than the mystery of the sea
The sun itself is in the room beside you
With a message of how good your life can be

I know that a heart can just get buried
Stone by stone, crushing hope until it dies
Far away, but the message somehow carries
Beloved, it is time for you to rise. Time for you to RISE UP...

With a sudden sense of wonder | Though the promise goes unspoken
As the joy comes to your eyes | When the joy comes to your eyes
From the burden you've been under | For your soul was never broken

Beloved, it is time for you to rise, time for you to rise.

There's nothing wrong with taking time for sleeping
Your eyes are weary with the things that you have seen
A deeper promise your soul is keeping
Right in time for this appointment in your dream

Angels whisper so as not to wake you
There's nothing else in this whole world for you to do
But follow on to where your dream may take you
To see your footsteps from an eagle's point of view

..............................................

This is interesting, for the chorus, the lines for the first time are to the left of the | , and for the second chorus, they are on the right. The words RISE UP are repeated before each line. huh. that's kind of a schmancy, space saving way of writing it....

Ask For More

This one has been circling in my head, but only a few lines... had to find the rest and get it right!

Ask For More
from Into The Mystery, by David Wilcox
..............................................

Something is wrong, but nothing you can put your finger on
In so many ways it's going fine.
You couldn't complain, you say, and day to day you get along
But lately you lie awake at night

What are you missing? Even though
You're not alone- you wake up lonely
You felt this way before
You know it's true, it's calling you to ASK FOR MORE

Like a message in a bottle, cross the ocean
just to wash up on your shore
From deep in your heart, please, ASK FOR MORE

A beautiful dream you had reminds you of the emptiness
Something your soul is trying to say
Usually you can close your eyes and not remember this
But it's echoing back from miles away

Only a whisper - showing you something you already know
What are you missing? Even though
You're not alone- you wake up lonely
You've had this dream before
Signs are true, calling you to ASK FOR MORE

Like the fragrance of the garden
That can reach you through the cracks around your door
God speaks in your heart, please, ASK FOR...

Oh yummy musical goodness!

yes, yes. A very good concert tonight. Johnsmith My heart feels better. He even dedicated his encore to Levi. It was a good one. And I totally scored, because Jewel let me do the door, and so no paying for ticket! AND I bought a CD at the end, and Johnsmith was like "Did you pay for that? Let me give you your money back! No, no, thanks for helping!" So wow. He's having a songwriting workshop tomorrow, and I was trying to figure out if I could afford it, but I realize, if I was going to pay for the CD anyway, and now I don't have to, well, that's sort of like only ending up to pay $9 for the workshop... so yeah. and he seems like the good kind of person that will only be encouraging. So I better go. Even if I haven't played anything in soooo long. I'm a bit nervous... poop. yeah... get over it kiddo.

Had a good talking with the twinnels today. got to hear the work saga from K. god, we all go through our own variation of the same dang thing, all across the country. man.

I won another point or two in the good sister books... gave Collin a ride to the movies because he was late, and loaned him some cash because he didn't have any. And turned out he and Gregory also used it to go to the MSAE theater night, so it was put to good cause. I'll have to get paid back for sure, but yeah... good stuff.
